Act Six Celebrates 59 New College Graduates

This summer Degrees of Change, in partnership with our three Northwest community affiliates, celebrates the newest alumni from our seven Act Six partner colleges in Washington and Oregon. These graduates have records of distinguished leadership, service and academic achievement and bring the number of Act Six alumni to nearly 300! Ready to Rise Scholars Arrive at Washington College Campuses

This Fall, after a summer of trainings and an outdoor leadership expedition, Ready to Rise sent its first set of 56 scholars to seven different four- and two-year public college campuses across Washington State. Focused on scholars from Clark County, Tacoma, and Yakima Valley, Ready to Rise is Degrees of Change’s newest program designed to be a highly scalable college transition, completion and leadership development program, and complementing the Act Six program’s focus on private, liberal arts colleges.

Tim Herron receives Executive Leadership Award of Excellence

Degrees of Change founder and president Tim Herron was presented the Executive Leadership Award of Excellence at the 2017 National College Access Network (NCAN) national conference in San Diego, CA. The award, given annually, honors a leader from a college access program who has shown significant dedication and hard work towards their organization, the community they serve, and the field of college access. Act Six Tacoma-Seattle and Ready to Rise-Tacoma Update

Degrees of Change, based in Tacoma, serves as the national office for the Act Six and Ready to Rise programs, supporting and leading local community-based nonprofits to implement these college completion and leadership development programs in their home communities. This past summer our Tacoma affiliate, Northwest Leadership Foundation, asked Degrees of Change to take on the local operations of programs in Tacoma and Seattle. Degrees of Change is excited to welcome the local program team and deepen our involvement and commitment to our Puget Sound home.

  • Save the Date: Act Six New Scholar Celebration – Tuesday, March 13th 6 to 8 pm, at Urban Grace Church in Tacoma. Come celebrate new Act Six scholars, hear their stories, and encourage them as they begin their Act Six journey.

Leadership in Action

  • New partnership between Heritage University and Seattle Children’s Hospital gives three Yakima Act Six nursing students hands on experience.
  • Whitworth sophomores and Act Six scholars, Catalina Corvalan and Sara Trujillo advocate for the undocumented community as members of the Spokane Dream Project.
  • Western Washington University sophomore and Ready to Rise Coach Citlaly Ramirez was the featured speaker at the GeekWire event in October.
  • Pacific Lutheran University and Act Six alumni, Mycal Ford, participated in the U.S. – China Social and Cultural Dialogue in Washington DC this fall (see picture above).
